People inspire us


The origins of Multiexport Foods date back to 1983 when two young and adventuresome recent economics graduates –Martín Borda and Alberto del Pedregal– saw a window of opportunity in the increase in Chilean exports. They began by exporting non-traditional products such as lapislazuli and leather, but they shortly expanded their shipments to include products from the sea, such as abalone, sea snails, crabs, and hake, all processed by other companies.


By the mid 1980s, when the predominant business was abalone, it made sense to have their own plant for canning the products that were bought directly from small-scale fishermen. In 1987, with José Ramón Gutiérrez, Hugo Pino, and Carlos Pucci already involved in the business, the Cardonal plant was ready for round the clock processing of this mollusk and other products that were sent overseas.


However, the raw material grew scarce and prices began to rise. At that time, aquaculture became an attractive option.


Operations began by processing salmon purchased from other companies in the process plant. In 1989, opened the first salmon farming center in the Chiloe town of Dalcahue.


From that moment on, the salmon business began to boom, leading to the installation of multiple salmon farming centers, the formation of strategic alliances, and new investments.


In 1991, a subsidiary was created in Miami in order to commercialize their own and other products in the US market. Four years later, a strategic alliance was formed with Mitsui & Co. for salmon export to the Japanese market.


In 1996, after purchasing 50% of Chisal S.A.’s freshwater assets, the company began a productive integration process, which was consolidated three years later with the total acquisition of this company.


As it continued to grow, in 2001, Multiexport Foods became owner of Piscicultura de Río Bueno S.A., and the following year, it inaugurated what was at the time the most modern smoked salmon plant in the world.


Always on the cutting edge of innovation, in 2006 it started a modern recirculation fish farming facility in Puerto Fonck. Around the same time, the company wrapped up construction of its processing plant, which has state of the art technology and an annual capacity of 80 thousand tons. Three additional recirculation fish farms are currently in the works.


These results have been the fruit of the teamwork of a group of enterprising partners and friends who have learned how to pass on their humanist culture and unique entrepreneurial vision into all of their businesses, not to mention the close to two thousand workers, whose daily passion, innovation, and dedication have consolidated the leadership of Multiexport Foods.
